I love painting orange slices because they are like juicy, little gems. For this painting I set them up near a window in direct light to get strong shadows and those yummy colors inside the fruit. I wanted a modern look with the blocks of color in the background, and tried out a million color combinations before landing on this one. As I set up compositions like this one, the subjects seem to take on a life of their own. In this case the slices seem to all be heading towards the blue square, hence the title.
